Thanksgiving week at Kiawah's Main Gate this year comes down to a phone screen. A guest pulls up, shows the QR code their host texted, and drives on toward Night Heron Park or a family table somewhere past the roundabout. If a guest has no code, the officer asks for four things: the host's name and address, the guest's name, and the dates of the visit.
That last item matters more this November than it did a year ago. The Kiawah Island Community Association adopted its Roadway and Gate Access Policy on December 8, 2025, 11 days after last Thanksgiving. The board revised it on May 4, 2026. It replaces all earlier gate access policies. So this is the first big family holiday under the new rules, and the dates on a guest's pass will shape the week as much as the resort's event schedule does.
What Changed Between Thanksgivings
KICA phased the policy in through 2026. Three deadlines apply to guests coming for the holiday:
- February 2, 2026: KICA stopped recognizing KP-issued VIP credentials and similar passes.
- April 1, 2026: KICA began enforcing a single-day limit on credentials for guests who aren't staying overnight. It also stopped recognizing RFID credentials it didn't issue.
- June 1, 2026: KICA stopped recognizing paper guest passes issued by anyone other than KICA.
Taken together, every guest credential now comes from KICA, and each one is tied to specific dates. The policy also lets KICA issue credentials digitally in advance, by email or text. A paper pass from any issuer other than KICA is no longer recognized at the gate.
One Day Means One Day
The single-day rule is the one most likely to change how a hosting week is planned. Say relatives drive over from Mount Pleasant for Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, then want to come back Friday afternoon. That is two separate day-guest requests, because a non-overnight credential covers a single day. Guests who sleep at the house fall under a different rule.
| Guest type | What the request must include | Limit under the policy |
|---|---|---|
| Day guest, not staying overnight | Guest name and date of visit | One day per credential |
| Overnight guest at an owner's home | Guest's name and specific dates of stay | Up to 14 consecutive days, then a new request |
| Short-term rental or hotel guest | Requested by the owner, commercial owner or rental manager | Count tied to the Town business-license limit; no pass longer than 30 days |
A Thanksgiving week stay from Sunday the 22nd through Sunday the 29th is well within the 14-day overnight window. A family that stays through mid-December for the marathon would need a second request partway through. The policy also says a rental guest can't request a pass for their own visitor; the owner or the rental management company has to make that request.
KICA also keeps the right to limit guest credential requests to the number of parking spaces available. During a holiday week, that is a good reason to send requests early.
Sending the Code Before the Car Leaves Charleston
According to KICA's member and guest pass page, members can authorize family and friends through the ABDI Gate Access app or by contacting KICA Security. Here is how the app works:
- Download the ABDI Gate Access app for Apple or Android.
- If you have never used your ABDI account online or in the app, contact KICA Member Services first to activate it.
- Log in with the Community Code KICA. Your existing portal login also works in the app.
- Enter each guest's name and pass dates, then text or email them the QR code the app displays.
If you request a pass by phone or email instead, you'll need your security verification word. You can view or change it in the gate access portal. Housekeepers, caterers and other service providers aren't member-guests. KICA sends them through its separate commercial access process.
Thursday Through Saturday, the Island Goes Quiet
The commercial process has its own holiday calendar. KICA's business and service gate access page lists Thursday, Nov. 26, Friday, Nov. 27, and Saturday, Nov. 28, 2026, as dates when commercial work is not permitted. Normal commercial hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, and no work on Sundays.
Put that on a calendar and Wednesday, Nov. 25, becomes the last regular commercial workday before the holiday. Sunday is already closed to commercial work, so the next one is Monday, Nov. 30. A deck repair, a pressure washing or a guest-room touch-up meant to be done before family arrives needs to be finished by Wednesday evening. The same page lists Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2026, as a blackout date and notes that the Town of Kiawah Island's noise ordinance prohibits construction on town holidays.
The Week, Read Through the Gate
With passes and contractors sorted, here is the week as Kiawah Island Golf Resort and Freshfields Village have published it. The resort's Treehouse page says off-island guests need activity reservations and should show the confirmation email at the security gate. If you're planning around a resort event with houseguests or rental guests, call the resort at 843-768-6001 to confirm who can attend before anyone is counting on it.
Monday, Nov. 23. Freshfields Village holds its Thanksgiving Farmers Market from 1 to 5 p.m., with local produce, prepared foods and crafts. It's the last organized produce stop before the big cooking day.
Sunday, Nov. 22 through Thursday, Nov. 26. At the Treehouse, the resort runs a complimentary "What Are You Thankful For?" card wall at the amphitheater and a free Turkey Scavenger Hunt from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 25. Brynn Marie plays at the Night Heron Park Stage from 4:30 to 7 p.m. around the fire, with s'mores at four for $5. The event is complimentary and needs no reservation.
Thursday, Nov. 26. Music starts at 10 a.m. at Sanctuary Beach Access, and the Turkey Trot starts at 10:30. Choose a one-mile walk or run or a 5K on the beach. It's complimentary with no reservations, and a pie raffle drawing follows at 11:15. The Thanksgiving Festival fills Night Heron Park from 1 to 4 p.m. with mini golf, inflatables, face painting, lawn games and steel drums.
Friday, Nov. 27. The Mingo Point Oyster Roast & BBQ is already listed as "Fully Committed." The resort's Christmas Spectacular Festival runs from noon to 4 p.m. at Night Heron Park. At Freshfields Village, Santa arrives at Santa's Surf Shack on the Village Green for photos from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Island Duo plays until 2 p.m., and Dave Landeo takes over until 5.
Saturday, Nov. 28. The Freshfields holiday weekend adds a Holiday Market from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., DJ Ben Felton all day, and the St. Johns Fire truck on site for the third annual "Stuff a Truck."
Sunday, Nov. 29. Santa photos at Freshfields run a shorter 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the letter station is open for notes to the North Pole.
Some amenities stay limited no matter who is hosting. The Duck Derby on Tuesday, Nov. 24, is held at the Night Heron Family Pool. The resort notes that its pools are for resort guests and Governor's Club members only. Its pools page says entry requires a resort Amenity Card or Governor's Club Card.
The Beach Your Guests Will Walk
Houseguests arriving this year will find a different beach than summer visitors did. The Town's "Lights Out" ordinance covers sea turtle nesting season, May 1 to October 31, so beachfront lighting limits and the 9 p.m. ban on unfiltered flashlights on the beach no longer apply.
For guests bringing dogs, the Town of Kiawah Island's beach leash rules moved to the off-season schedule on November 1. Through March 15, dogs may be off leash from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. anywhere on the beach except the critical habitat areas at each end of the island. Dogs are banned from those areas all year. Leashes are required from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Owners have to stay with their dog, keep it under control and carry a leash. Electronic leashes are prohibited, and fines can reach $500 plus assessments. Away from the beach, pets have to be leashed unless they're in an enclosed area.
Pass Dates Past Thanksgiving
The same pass logic applies into December. KICA lists its members-only Tree Lighting at The Sandcastle for December 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. According to KICA's Tree Lighting event page, RSVP is required, and tickets go on sale Friday, Nov. 13. The Kiawah Island Marathon and Half Marathon start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, from West Beach Village. KICA also lists race day as a commercial blackout date. Guests who come for Thanksgiving and stay for the race will need a second overnight credential before the 14-day window runs out.
